In the UK the maximum speed you will get from a 3G network is 7.2Mbits with Vodafone. O2 actually limits their customer's 3G bandwidth to 128kbps... which is truely awful!

7.2 mb !!!! lucky of you, I live in Argentina, isps here promise you 2 megas but 3G connection is sooooooo slow, for instance, it may take me 30 seconds to load the gmail mobile home page

isps are mainly the cell companies: telecom from France, telefonica from Spain and Claro from Mexico.

Forget how fast...I just spent a week in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had zero service of any kind. Then once I got some, it was not on ATT. That cause my out of area data transfer amount to go up and I got a really nasty call from them saying I was "almost" in violation of the ATT TOS and needed to stop using my phone until I returned to an area where they offered full coverage.

Ain't technology grand?

How do you test 3G speed? All the bandwidth testing sites I've seen are Flash based and Flash doesn't run on the iPhone...

I'm not sure either. My question is about the advertised speeds and what the mobile networks promise. I don't actually think anyone in the UK with a 7.2MB Vodafone connection will actually get that.

There is a free app from speedtest.net.

LOL...the EXACT SAME thing happened to me last year in Hot Springs, South Dakota while heading to Wind Cave National Park.

I was surprised, that in a lot of areas with population there was no coverage.

I just got 7560 kbps down, 423 kbps up (uptown Manhattan - Washington Heights). Pretty good IMHO - that the same upstream speed as my cable Internet connection and half the download speed of cable.
